Today we went to Marjon to meet the actors and director of Dr Faustus, and have a run through of the ideas and concepts with Fiona, over the costumes and the set.
This project is good for us, as having pre-designed costumes by a designer, it will give us the experience of working with Fiona, to realise her design, by sourcing fabric that meet and match the ones in her designs, and maybe suggesting the ones we think as makers will work best for the sort of production were making for.
We were told it is going to be a high physical show. rafters or scaffolding will be up as part of the set, hoops and bars for swinging and climbing, floor gymnastics? maybe.
Actors will be working together to create shapes and new 'characters' with the use of masks. these will probably be depicting the deadly sins that Faustus meets throughout the play.
Because of this amount of physical activity, the fabrics and materials we use are going to integral to how costumes are made and put together. over the holidays we were encouraged to look up how to sew stretch fabrics. this makes sense now. :)
Most actors will be on stage at all times, working as part of the background or working props ie masks, to create these illusions ans shapes that Faustus will encounter.
At this stage there is still no solid script drawn up. and no actors have been cast in specific roles. both Kevin and Fiona stated that in the case of this production, there will be many changes made through the process, scenes may change, costumes may need re thinking or altering. this will be difficult, but im sure things are not 100% plain sailing in the case of theatre normally either.
After the initial discussions about the play, we went on to measure all cast members.
